This extremely popular sport and food fish is avidly pursued in several Asian countries by local fishermen.
The Snakehead is native to Asia, and are sold as pets in the USA. When the fish outgrow the aquariums, and/or the cost to feed them substantially increases, some people release their pet snakeheads in nearby ponds and lakes.
Snakeheads will eat just about anything, literally. There are people that raise them on feeder goldfish and then graduate them to mice, rats, and even rabbits.
Of the 28 species of snakehead, there are three very popular to sport fishing in Asia, the Great Snakehead, the Striped Snakehead, and the Giant Snakehead.
The Giant Snakehead, the most predacious of the species, and one which is known to attack humans, has been collected in waters in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
In Asia, there are many tales of Giant Snakehead growing to absurd sizes and attacking and eating humans.
